This is a matching pair of vintage tribal Berber silver cuff bracelets from North Africa. A similar type of bracelet was worn in pairs in Egypt (the Siwa Oasis), Tunisia and Libya, but the pair on offer lacks the middle ridge seen in this type of bracelet. Another notable difference is that the bracelet tapers from widest at the front to narrowest on either end. These bracelets do however share with North African bracelets the type of Berber symbology depicted with chasing. The symbols of fertility: the fish and eggs are clearly displayed on this pair. The bracelets are carved in a primitive fashion which suggests local jewelry as opposed to pieces made for tourists. They are rough around the edges which suggests to me that they have been acquired by a collector soon after they were made and put away for many years. The bracelets are not marked but do test as high grade silver. They are in good vintage condition.
Inner circumference : 15.5 cm (6 1/4") with an additional 2.5 cm (1") gap. The gap could be made bigger so that you can slip your wrist in. Inner diameter is 6.5 cm (just over 2 1/2).They are oval rather than round Width is 4.5 cm (1 3/4) at widest and weight for the pair is 145 g. They are an absolute find for any lover of ethnic jewelry. The item "Vintage North African Berber Wide Bracelets Cuffs Pair Silver" is in sale since Saturday, November 4, 2017.
