Vintage Art Deco White Metal / Polished Steel. Pair of Candlesticks - Circa 1930.

This is a nice pair of solidly made and most decorative candlesticks - the style is typically art deco, with their angular stepped bases and sconces. As is common with many candlesticks from this era and earlier, they are made in several parts. The stepped sconce and base unscrew to leave the tubular central column - a long threaded rod runs down the entire length of the central part. As part of my inspection of the items, initially looking for makers marks, I unscrewed both sticks.

It was very apparent that it'd been many years since they were last disassembled, maybe never! On one of them, the long screw threaded rod showed some rusty coloured surface corrosion, but the metal is solid and stable, and it does not affect how the piece fits together. There was some clues as to how they'd been made, with some rough casting mark to the metal - obviously, these are not seen when the stick are assembled. The underside of each of the bases has its original hessian type fabric - one of these has been attacked by moths at some time in the past (see pictures 10 and 11) - underneath this fabric there appears to be a fibreboard type backing. Pictures 11 and 12 show the edge of the rim on the base, and you can just see a brassy colour showing through if you look closely.

The sticks measure approximately 19.7cm in height - the width across the base is 7.3cm - the width across the sconce is 4.5cm. The total unpacked weight of the pair is 515g. The condition of each stick is good and solid with no major issues to report. You will of noted from the description above that the material to the base of one is mothed, but of course can't be seen when in use - and also that one of the internal screw threads shows corrosion, but again this can't be seen and doesn't affect their construction. The metal is polished, but shows a nice patina from cleaning over the years - there are one or two surface contact marks here and there, but nothing considered to be damaged or offensive to the eye.

If I were being ultra critical, one stick does have a very slight lean, but this is barely noticeable and merely mentioned for the accuracy of the description. As a decorative pair of candlesticks, they are effortlessly elegant and would grace a home from a similar era - given their modern look, they would also look good in a lot of modern homes as well. Please note, the sticks take a regular dinner candle size in the sconce (I think I got the examples shown from Tesco or Sainsbury's) - the candles shown in the images are not included and are only shown for decorative purposes.

Please study the images provided to satisfy yourself as to the condition of the items offered - if you have any further questions please ask and I'll be happy to oblige.
